Bonaventure Dossou

Bonaventure Dossou (24) is a master’s student at Jacobs University in Bremen, a research intern at Mila Quebec AI Institute working under the supervision of Professor Yoshua Bengio and Dr Dianbo Liu, and a pharma technical analyst at Roche. He also joined the excellence programme of Scientist in Residence from Modelis, a drug-discovery company based in Montréal. His research areas include machine and deep learning (and its applications in computer vision, and natural language processing for healthcare and African languages), computational biology, and network science approaches in biology and medicine. He received the Community Award for Research, Innovation and Diversity at Jacobs University. He and Emezue have cofounded Lanfrica, a project to connect all African language resources. He is from Benin.

Masakhane, today a group of more than 400 volunteers from more than 20 African countries, is helping to change predominantly monolingual and homogeneous spaces in technology into something far richer and more accessible for people in and from Africa.
